How crypto exchanges are regulated in Canada

Canada put crypto exchanges through a genuine licensing gauntlet. The Canadian Securities Administrators require platforms to sign restricted-dealer undertakings — real commitments on custody, leverage and stablecoin listings — while FINTRAC registration as a money services business covers the AML side. It is a two-headed regime, provincial securities regulators plus the federal AML agency, and it has teeth: platforms that would not accept the undertakings simply left the country.

And leave they did. Binance, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Gate.io, MEXC and Bitfinex all exited the Canadian market rather than operate under the CSA's terms. What stayed is a smaller but cleaner roster: Coinbase and Kraken completed registration, Crypto.com is in, and the domestic venues NDAX, Newton and Coinsquare have been FINTRAC-registered from the start. For once, the compliant list and the usable list are the same list.

The CSA's stablecoin position is the quirk foreigners miss: several stablecoins are treated as securities or subject to value-referenced crypto asset rules, so Canadian platforms list far fewer of them than global venues do, and USDT availability varies by exchange. Margin and leverage are tightly limited under the same undertakings. We think Canadians got a fair trade — fewer toys, but exchanges that have actually promised a regulator how client assets are held.

Deposits, withdrawals and local rails in Canada

Interac e-Transfer is how Canadians fund exchanges, full stop. It clears in minutes, most platforms take it free or nearly free, and the practical ceiling is around $10,000 per day depending on your bank's limits. For anything larger, a bank wire does the job at the usual wire cost. Every registered venue we track — NDAX, Newton, Coinsquare, Kraken, Coinbase — supports e-Transfer in both directions, and withdrawal speed back to your bank is a genuine differentiator between them.

Card deposits exist on some platforms but the fees make them pointless when e-Transfer is this fast. Two things worth knowing from our testing: some banks flag first-time e-Transfers to crypto platforms and hold them for manual review, and daily limits reset on a rolling basis, not at midnight. Plan a large purchase across two or three days rather than fighting your bank's fraud desk on day one.

Availability and restrictions in Canada

If a global exchange is not on the CSA registered or undertaking list, it should not be serving you, and most of the big offshore names genuinely do not — Binance's 2023 exit was the loudest, but OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Gate.io, MEXC and Bitfinex followed the same road out. Accounts were wound down with withdrawal deadlines. The Ontario Securities Commission in particular has shown it will pursue platforms that keep serving Canadians informally.

Restrictions inside the registered venues are mostly about product, not access: leverage is capped or absent, certain stablecoins are unlisted, and some altcoins never make it through the listing review. Quebec residents occasionally face additional venue-level differences. Our view: the product limits are real but the alternative — offshore accounts with no recourse under Canadian law — is worse for anyone holding meaningful size.

Crypto taxes in Canada

The CRA taxes crypto under the capital gains regime, with a 50% inclusion rate — half your gain is added to taxable income at your marginal rate. Frequent, business-like trading can be reclassified as fully taxable business income instead, which is the trap active traders should price in. Crypto-to-crypto swaps are dispositions and must be reported.
