Why Liquidity Matters More as Your Ticket Grows
A $100 buyer barely notices liquidity. A $100,000 buyer pays for it in cash. Here is where the line sits.

The cost that scales with you
Trading fees are flat percentages. Slippage is not. It grows with the size of your order relative to the depth of the book, which means liquidity is nearly irrelevant at $100 and dominates everything else at $100,000. Most fee-comparison arguments online ignore this entirely, because the people arguing are mostly trading small.
We built our rating with this in mind. Liquidity weighs 15% in our base model, but on our liquidity-focused pages we let it climb to 40%, because for large tickets it is simply the biggest line item.
The $100 buyer
Buy $100 of BTC anywhere reasonable and the book barely notices you. Even on a thin venue like Revolut, scored 6.6 for liquidity in our set, your fill lands at or near the top of book. Your real costs are the trading fee and the deposit or withdrawal fee, and those can differ by a factor of five between venues.
At this size, chasing the deepest book is wasted effort. Chase low fees and a payment method that does not gouge you instead.
The $10,000 buyer
At $10,000 the picture starts to shift. On Binance, Bybit or OKX, a market order this size still fills within a basis point or two of mid on the majors. On a thin book you might eat 0.10% to 0.30% of slippage, which is $10 to $30 of pure loss before fees.
Run the comparison honestly. Coinbase charges 0.40%/0.60% maker/taker against Binance at 0.10%/0.10%, but Coinbase carries a 9.2 liquidity subscore with genuinely deep USD books. For a $10,000 USD-funded buy, the total cost gap is smaller than the fee table suggests.
The $100,000 buyer
Now liquidity is the whole game. A $100,000 market order on a book with $300,000 of depth within 0.5% of mid will walk through multiple price levels. Half a percent of slippage is $500. That dwarfs any fee difference between venues, including the 0.00%/0.05% headline at MEXC.
This is why professional flow concentrates on the deepest venues. In our dataset that means Binance at 9.9, Bybit at 9.6, OKX at 9.5, and for USD, Coinbase at 9.2. Kraken at 8.9 remains a solid choice for size in USD and EUR pairs.
Where to draw your own line
A workable rule: if your order is under roughly 1% of the visible depth within 0.1% of mid, execution quality is a rounding error and fees decide. Above that, depth decides. On the biggest venues that threshold sits comfortably in six figures for BTC; on thin venues it can arrive at a few thousand dollars.

At what order size does liquidity start to matter?
As a rough rule, once your order exceeds about 1% of the visible depth near mid price. On top venues that means six figures on BTC. On thin venues it can matter from a few thousand dollars.
Should a small buyer ever care about liquidity scores?
Only mildly. For orders in the hundreds of dollars, fees and payment rails matter far more. A cheap venue with a 6.8 liquidity score will serve a $100 buyer perfectly well.
Is a low-fee exchange always cheaper for large orders?
No. A 0.05% taker fee saves $50 per $100,000, while a thin book can cost $500 or more in slippage on the same ticket. Total cost is fee plus slippage, and slippage usually wins at size.
How does CryptoExID weight liquidity?
It is 15% of the base scoring model. On liquidity-focused pages we raise the weight to as much as 40%, because for the readers of those pages execution quality is the dominant cost.
Can I avoid slippage entirely with limit orders?
Mostly. A limit order caps your price, so you never pay more than you set. The trade-off is fill risk: in a fast market the price can run away and leave your order unfilled.
