KuCoin review verdict for US users

Our verdict takes one paragraph. KuCoin listed more than 700 assets when we checked on Aug 18, 2026, and that range is why the exchange matters. Our data team's one-line verdict: the widest altcoin shelf in the ranked set, with US access restricted after settlement. In January 2025, KuCoin pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business, paid about $300 million, and agreed to exit the US market for at least two years, per the DOJ announcement. We confirmed the practical effect on Aug 18, 2026: from a US connection, the signup country selector did not permit US or Canadian registration.

KuCoin suits eligible-country traders hunting small-cap tokens that regulated venues rarely list, and who accept lighter oversight in exchange. On whether KuCoin is legit, the documented basics are real: founded in 2017 and registered in the Seychelles. Legit and available are separate questions. US readers should not attempt workarounds. Start with the best crypto exchanges available in the US or go straight to the current KuCoin alternatives for US users. The sections below cover security, fees, and the CryptoExID editorial team's hands-on testing.

Is KuCoin safe?

KuCoin security has a public record, and one chapter is ugly. In September 2020, attackers drained roughly $280 million from the exchange's hot wallets. KuCoin said it recovered over 80% of the stolen funds through chain freezes and insurance, per its post-incident reports. We cannot independently confirm that percentage. Hot wallets stay online so withdrawals can process quickly. That convenience is the attack surface.

Account-level controls looked current in our testing. We enabled two-factor authentication, set an anti-phishing code, and confirmed that withdrawals from our test account required email approval under its settings. Those steps protect your login. They do nothing about platform custody risk, which is the lesson of 2020.

KuCoin publishes proof-of-reserves attestations. The scope of any asset comparison and liability review is limited to the date, assets, and methods stated in the individual attestation. Publication alone does not establish solvency or prevent the next breach. Read it as a transparency signal, not a safety net. If custody is your top criterion, weigh KuCoin against the crypto exchanges ranked for security before funding an account. For a small trading balance, eligible users may find the controls adequate. For long-term savings, we would look elsewhere.

KuCoin fees explained

KuCoin trading fees start plainly. Standard spot orders cost 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker, per KuCoin's fee schedule, checked Aug 18, 2026. Paying fees in KCS, the exchange's token, carries a discount, but we have not verified a fixed rate, so treat the schedule itself as the source.

We tested an order on Aug 18, 2026. From our eligible-country test account, we placed a market order with KCS fee payment disabled. The order preview displayed the taker fee before we tapped confirm, and the charged fee matched the displayed rate.

KuCoin withdrawal fees work differently: they are asset and network specific, so one coin can cost different amounts on different chains. The withdrawal screen shows the live fee and the exact receive amount before confirmation, and that preview is the number to trust. For context on where KuCoin lands on costs, see our lowest-fee crypto exchange rankings.

Coins, futures and advanced trading tools

The asset catalog included more than 700 coins when we checked on Aug 18, 2026. That count is the product. Many are small-cap tokens with no listing on US-regulated venues, which is why altcoin traders keep it on the shortlist.

Breadth cuts both ways. Thin books mean a mid-sized market order can walk the price, and closing a position can be harder than opening it. We treat slippage and exit risk as the real cost of the long tail.

The advanced stack is broad, and each tool changes your risk rather than just your options. The futures desk centers on leveraged long and short positions, with funding payments passing between the two sides. Margin borrows against your collateral, so losses can run past what you planned. P2P matches you with another user and may hold the crypto in escrow while users complete and confirm payment. Staking can lock tokens to earn network rewards. Copy trading can replicate a chosen trader's orders inside your own account, but execution may differ. Bots execute rules you define around the clock, and the API opens the same functions to external software. Depending on the product and country, lending may pay interest on idle assets that margin traders borrow. For a head-to-head on derivatives depth, see the Binance vs KuCoin comparison. Confirm current leverage and rate terms in the app before trading.

KYC, supported countries, payments and limits

KuCoin KYC is not optional anymore. Identity verification has been mandatory since 2023, and both trading and withdrawals sit behind it, per KuCoin's policy pages we checked on Aug 18, 2026. In our eligible-country test, verification asked for a government ID and a liveness check.

The bigger gate is geography. The US and Canada are not available. We ran the registration flow from a US connection on Aug 18, 2026, and the country selector blocked both.

Payment methods and limits depend on your account rather than a global table. Card and third-party providers, supported fiat currencies, deposit minimums, and per-transaction caps are shown for the specific verified account. The only dependable source is the deposit page inside that account.

What we found using the KuCoin app

This KuCoin app review comes from the CryptoExID editorial team's iOS and desktop sessions on Aug 18, 2026. On mobile, market search tops the trade tab; we reached the order preview from there. The preview shows the price and fee alongside the final total before you commit. Friction showed up in order entry: limit orders took an extra screen on mobile. Desktop felt denser but faster for managing open orders.

The withdrawal screen did its job well. We entered a withdrawal without submitting it and switched between the available networks. Each switch updated the fee and the receive amount, and a warning told us to match the network to the receiving wallet. Support runs through in-app chat.
