Kraken review verdict

Kraken has earned its standing the slow way: operating since 2011, a clean exchange-level security record and pricing that rewards traders who learn Kraken Pro. This review comes from hands-on testing by the CryptoExID editorial team, verified through August 18, 2026. Security-conscious US traders get one of the strongest packages available, which is why Kraken appears in our best crypto exchanges in the US ranking. Casual buyers pay a premium. Instant Buy pricing runs well above Pro rates, and residents of New York and Washington state cannot sign up at all.

Kraken safety, custody and regulatory standing

Kraken security record

The safety evidence is strong, with limits. CryptoExID incident records show no major exchange-level hack at Kraken from its 2011 launch through August 18, 2026. That is a finding, not a guarantee. The company says the majority of client assets sit in cold storage, and a decade and a half of operating history gives the claim more weight than marketing copy usually carries. Kraken also places in our most secure crypto exchanges ranking.

Proof of reserves and custody

Kraken publishes recurring attestations on its proof-of-reserves page, letting clients confirm their balances were included in the reported liabilities. One caveat matters. Proof of reserves matches assets against client balances at a point in time; it is not a full financial audit and reveals nothing about solvency between snapshots.

US regulatory status

On legitimacy, the US picture is concrete. Kraken operates as Payward, Inc., with a FinCEN money services business registration and state money transmitter licenses, per FinCEN records and Kraken's licensing disclosures. The 2023 SEC settlement over its staking program forced a restructured US offer, per the SEC's order. The order concerned registration, not fraud.

Kraken fees, Pro pricing versus Instant Buy

Which screen you use decides what you pay. That is the single most important fact about Kraken's fees.

Spot trading fees

On Kraken Pro, spot trades start at 0.16% maker and 0.26% taker, per Kraken's fee schedule, checked August 18, 2026. A maker order sits on the book as a limit order and adds liquidity. A taker order executes immediately against it. Place a $500 market buy on Pro and the taker fee is $1.30. Use a resting limit order and the fee drops to $0.80.

Instant Buy costs

The retail app's Instant Buy quotes a single price with the fee built in, and it costs more. In a same-session test on August 12, 2026, Instant Buy displayed a $7.50 fee line on a $500 Bitcoin purchase, before any spread built into the quoted price. The identical order size as a Pro market buy showed $1.30. Quotes move, so treat those as one session's snapshot, not a fixed spread. Frequent buyers should learn Pro.

Withdrawal charges

Kraken withdrawal fees vary by asset and network, and they shift with blockchain conditions. We do not quote static figures because they go stale. Check the live confirmation screen before approving any withdrawal. If fees drive your choice, see our lowest-fee crypto exchanges ranking.

Kraken KYC, payment methods and account limits

Verification process

KYC is mandatory before you fund an account: legal name, address, date of birth and a government ID. Our verification cleared in under an hour, though Kraken's funding documentation warns reviews can take longer during busy periods. Higher verification tiers raise your limits for deposits, withdrawals and trading.

ACH, wires and cards

US customers can fund with ACH, domestic wire or debit card. PayPal is not supported. We logged a $500 ACH deposit initiated at 9:12 a.m. ET on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The funds showed in our balance at 11:05 a.m. the same day, about two hours, and were tradable immediately. The withdrawal hold lifted Monday, August 10. Kraken's documentation says ACH can take up to five business days to fully settle, so our run sat at the fast end. More detail in our guide to buy crypto with ACH.

Deposit and withdrawal limits

Limits scale with verification status and differ by payment rail, so two accounts can see different ceilings on the same day. Check your own account's funding screen for current numbers rather than trusting any third-party table, including ours.

Supported coins and trading products

Asset selection

Kraken lists about 220 assets, per its asset directory, checked August 18, 2026. The large caps are all here. Coverage trails US rivals that list 300 or more, though. If a specific small-cap token matters to you, confirm the listing before opening an account. Our Kraken alternatives for US traders page maps deeper catalogs.

Margin, staking and automation

Beyond spot, Kraken offers margin trading, staking, an OTC desk for larger orders, trading bots and API access. US staking exists in a restructured form after the 2023 SEC settlement, with a narrower asset list than the global product. Margin adds borrowing costs, quoted inside the trade ticket before you commit.

Futures restrictions

For US readers the futures story is short. Kraken Derivatives runs a futures venue, but US retail customers cannot access it. Eligibility depends on jurisdiction and client classification, so non-US readers should check Kraken's current terms for their region.

Kraken app, trading experience and customer support

Our app testing split in two. The retail app handles funding, Instant Buy and portfolio checks cleanly, but it never volunteers how much more its pricing costs. Kraken Pro's app and web terminal expose depth charts, order types and the fee tier you actually want. Order entry on Pro felt precise.

Support testing produced the section's best data point. At 11:40 p.m. ET we opened a 24/7 chat and asked which fee applies to a Bitcoin withdrawal and where to see it before confirming. The first agent answered correctly, pointed us to the withdrawal confirmation screen and did it without a handoff, in about four minutes. Across our test runs, response quality landed above the category average.

US availability and country restrictions

Kraken serves 48 of 50 US states. Two states are excluded: New York and Washington. That comes from Kraken's geographic restrictions page, checked August 18, 2026, and residents there cannot finish signup. Support will not override these blocks.

Outside the US the supported-country list is long, but product rules differ by jurisdiction. A supported country does not guarantee futures, staking or margin access. Check Kraken's current eligibility pages for your state and product before depositing.

Who Kraken is best for, and who should choose an alternative

Our testing points to a clear profile. Kraken fits security-focused holders, fee-sensitive traders willing to use Kraken Pro, and US customers who want the restructured US staking product or OTC access. It fits poorly if you plan to rely on Instant Buy pricing, live in New York or Washington state, or want a catalog past roughly 220 assets. Beginners who will not learn Pro should price the convenience honestly. Coinbase is the usual cross-shop. Our Kraken vs Coinbase breakdown has the head-to-head numbers.

Kraken FAQ

Is Kraken safe to use?

Kraken has no major exchange-level hack in CryptoExID incident records covering its 2011 launch through August 18, 2026. The majority of client assets sit in cold storage, and Kraken publishes proof of reserves. No exchange is risk-free, so enable every account protection and treat attestations as snapshots, not guarantees.

Is Kraken legit in the United States?

Yes. Kraken operates in the US as Payward, Inc., holds a FinCEN money services business registration and state money transmitter licenses, and settled SEC charges over its staking program in 2023, restructuring the US offer per the SEC's order. Product-level restrictions still apply by state.

How much does Kraken charge in fees?

Kraken Pro spot trades start at 0.16% maker and 0.26% taker, per Kraken's fee schedule, checked August 18, 2026. Instant Buy costs meaningfully more, and Kraken withdrawal fees vary by asset and network, so confirm the live figure on the confirmation screen before approving.

Does Kraken require identity verification?

Yes. KYC is required before funding, and your verification tier sets deposit, withdrawal and trading limits. Two accounts can face different ceilings on the same day, so check your own account's funding screen for the current numbers that apply to you.

Where is Kraken available in the US?

Kraken operates in 48 of 50 states. New York and Washington state are excluded, per Kraken's geographic restrictions page, checked August 18, 2026. Even in supported locations, futures, staking and margin carry separate eligibility rules, so verify product access before depositing.

Can US customers trade futures on Kraken?

No. Kraken Derivatives offers futures in eligible regions, but US retail customers cannot access them. US accounts are limited to spot, margin where eligible, staking and the other listed products. Check Kraken's current eligibility documentation if your residency or account classification changes.
