How crypto exchanges are regulated in UK
In the UK the Financial Conduct Authority runs the show. Every exchange serving British customers must hold FCA registration under the anti-money-laundering regime, and the FCA has rejected far more applicants than it has approved. Since October 2023 the financial promotions rules added a second layer: mandatory risk warnings on every page, a 24-hour cooling-off period before new clients can invest, and a ban on referral bonuses. If an exchange is still offering you a sign-up reward, it is not compliant.
The promotions regime reshaped the market more than most people expected. Compliant platforms had to rebuild their onboarding flows, add appropriateness questionnaires, and strip out anything the FCA classes as an incentive to invest. Several offshore names decided the cost was not worth it and quietly stopped accepting UK registrations instead. From where we sit, the venues that stayed and complied are exactly the ones worth using — the filter did the work for us.
One rule dominates everything else: crypto derivatives have been banned for UK retail investors since January 2021. No perpetuals, no futures, no leveraged tokens — the FCA concluded retail clients could not reliably value them. That leaves spot trading only, and it applies regardless of where the exchange is incorporated. Any platform offering a UK resident 100x leverage is operating outside the rules, and your consumer protections there are precisely zero.
Deposits, withdrawals and local rails in UK
Faster Payments is the rail that makes UK crypto convenient: free on every FCA-registered exchange we track, and deposits typically credit within minutes at any hour. There is no reason to use anything slower. Debit cards work as an instant alternative but carry the usual 1.5-4% markup depending on the venue, and some UK banks — notably a few high-street names — still throttle or block card payments to crypto platforms altogether.
PayPal and Apple Pay round out the options on the larger venues. Our standing advice for UK users: test your specific bank with a small Faster Payments deposit first, because bank-side friction, not exchange-side friction, is the most common funding complaint we hear. Withdrawals back to the same named UK account are usually free and land the same day, which keeps the full fiat round trip cheaper than almost any other market we cover.
Availability and restrictions in UK
The list of platforms that stopped onboarding UK retail after the promotions regime is long: Bybit, Bitget, MEXC, Gate.io, HTX, Bitfinex, BingX, CoinEx, BitMart, Phemex and BTCC all currently decline new UK customers. That is most of the offshore derivatives complex in one sentence. Existing UK accounts on some of these venues were pushed to withdrawal-only mode, so if you hold a legacy balance somewhere, move it before access tightens further.
What remains is a spot-only market served by FCA-registered names, with the cooling-off period and appropriateness tests as the price of admission. We find the friction mildly annoying and entirely survivable. The derivatives ban is the harder constraint: UK traders who want leverage have no compliant retail route, and we would rather say that plainly than pretend an offshore workaround carries no consequences when something goes wrong.
Crypto taxes in UK
HMRC applies Capital Gains Tax to crypto disposals, and the annual exempt amount has been cut hard — to GBP 3,000 — so even modest traders now owe filings. Swapping one coin for another counts as a disposal. HMRC receives customer data directly from exchanges, so assume your activity is visible and keep records accordingly.
